Construction technology

Boardworks specializes in a process known as Epoxy Thermal Lamination. A two piece mold is built around a hand shaped original master from the shaper. This mold is used to make exact reproductions of the original shape. A computer shaped EPS(expanded poly styrene) core is fitted with three, 8mm wide, fiberglass re-enforced high density PVC foam stringers on the deck side of the board. This technology was developed in conjunction with the Boardworks Hawaii team to perform in Hawaiian size waves. Called the ESS (epoxy stringer system, as shown in the cut-away graphics), the ESS makes the boards stiffer than a regular epoxy board and enhances breaking strength. A layer of 9 lb high density PVC sheet foam is sandwiched between layers of glass on top and bottom. More glass with super-toughened (20 lb) epoxy foaming resin on the rails for impact resistance is added for extra strong rails. The board is hand laid up in the heated mold and then placed in a computer controlled press. This allows the board to cure under pressure at a high temperature. This results in a tight, light, and extremely durable finished product.
After extensive testing and customer response, we feel that our construction process is the best available in todays epoxy surfboard market.

Fins: all boards come with a complete set of fins, most longboards come with a standard size center fin box, fiberglass center fin and removable side fins from Futures fin system.

Care tips: Sandwiched epoxy boards with lightweight cores are sensitive to rapid pressure changes and extreme heat, as the air inside the board expands and the epoxy bond can be weakened by heat. Only epoxy should be used for repairs, the styrene in polyester resin can damage the EPS foam core. If stored in a padded bag, leave zippers open to allow air circulation, do not store in direct sunlight.

Warranty: Boardworks boards are guaranteed to be free of manufacturing defects for one year from date of purchase. Defective boards are either replaced or repaired if a repair can fully resolve the problem. Broken boards are not considered manufacturing defects under most circumstances. If you have a warranty claim, please take the board to your dealer.

New models: Many new models will be available in Hawaii by August 2004 from the new production facility. We will add new models to this page as they become available, please check with your local dealer or come back to boardworkshawaii.com for more information. Mahalo!
